Brake Controller Recommendations for 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon w/ Limited Space Under Dash

Question:

I need a brake controller for my 2012 Subaru Outback. It is already wired with a 4-way connecter. What will I need to adapt to a 7-way. I am worried about the lack of knee clearance under drivers side of the dash.

If you don't have a good spot to the right of the steering column under the dash to install the controller, we have a couple of alternatives that would work very well for you. The easier of the two to install would be the Curt Echo, part # C51180. The main unit plugs inline between the vehicle's and the trailer's connector. You would install a 7-way trailer connector using # ETBC7L. The Echo would use your iOS or Android powered smart phone as the control interface/display.

Or, if you'd prefer something that doesn't use a phone, the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite, part # RED44FR would be a good choice. The main unit installs out of the way, under the dash and is controlled by a small rotary knob that can install in the dash or the console. This controller would use a different install kit, part # ETBC7.

I've linked you to product description videos for both brake controllers, which will provide a better idea of how they work.
This being said, Hopkins makes the InSight Brake Controller, part # HM47297 that would be absolutely perfect for you. The display and manual brake switch can mount wherever you wish, while the control box mounts under the dash. No knee clearance compromise needed. If you go this route, you'll be better off using the Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7, which contains the adapter mentioned above, plus all the circuit breakers, hardware and wire needed to install the brake controller. I'll link you to some install videos and help articles that will help you with your installation.
