For your specific vehicle I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75083. I have included a video that shows this product being installed on a 1996 Ford Explorer.
For wiring I also suggest the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 118345 if you do not have a tow package.
If you do have a tow package then use Tow Package Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 118241. I also have a video of this wiring being installed on a 1996 Ford Explorer.
There is also an optional Ball Mount 3/4 inch Rise or 2 inch Drop, 7,500 pounds # C45010.
