Thank you for your recent purchase from etrailer.
Many times, issues related to wiring harness installation can be traced to a weak ground, so you can make sure the white ground wire is secured to a clean bare metal surface. But in your case, it does sound like the converter box may be damaged. Certain faults in trailer wiring could damage a converter. If this is what happened in your case, it could result in leakage from the output side of the converter back to the input side where the vehicle input wiring connects (to the taillights).
You can test the wiring going into the left (input) side of the box with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to make sure the vehicle is sending the correct signals into the box. If all input wiring shows correct signals reaching the box, then it may be a damaged converter. The Tow Ready harness # 118501 is covered by a 1-year limited warranty.
It is advisable to check your trailer wiring to ensure that there are no shorts that could again damage a new converter. Look for cracks or worn spots in the wiring insulation, especially where it makes turns, bends or contacts the trailer frame. Correct any such issues before installing a new converter.
I have linked a troubleshooting article for you with additional guidance. You can contact Customer Service at 800-298-8924 if you do find that you need to replace the harness.
