To install a brake controller on your 2006 Volvo XC90 with the factory 7-way trailer connector, you will need the brake controller wiring kit, # 5506. You will use the 20-amp circuit breaker on the black wire between the brake controller and the vehicle battery.

Volvo did not make a plug-in style connector on the XC90, so the brake controller will have to be hardwired into the tow package. If you are also looking for a brake controller, I recommend the Prodigy P3, # 90195. This is one of the top brake controllers on the market and it is easy to setup and use.

To install the brake controller, you will need to connect 4 wires, White, Black, Blue and Red. The white wire is for ground, and it should be grounded to a clean, bare metal surface or to the negative battery terminal. The black wire is for 12-volt power to the brake controller and should be connected directly to the positive battery post. The blue wire is the electric brake output wire, and it will be ran to the 7-way trailer connector at the back of the vehicle and connected to the 5 o'clock pin.

The last wire is the red wire. This wire connects to the cold side of the stoplight switch that is located above the brake pedal. You may see several wires coming from the stoplight switch. You want to connect the red wire to the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. To determine which wire only has power with the brake pedal, you will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to probe the wire as you press the brake pedal.

I have attached a few help articles on brake controllers and installation for you to check out.
