There are several different reasons why your trailer brakes might not be working. The controller could be bad or improperly wired. The trailer connector on the trailer or the vehicle could be damaged, mis-wired, dirty or corroded. The wiring on the trailer itself could be faulty. The brake magnets might be excessively worn.
There are many possibilities. If you would reply with the year, make and model of your vehicle, and a description of exactly what the controller is doing, I'd be happy to provide you with specific things to check. I'll also link you to our Brake Controller Troubleshooting Guide, which you might find helpful.
