Weight Distribution With Sway Control For 2006 Dodge 1500 Truck With Camper
Question:
I am purchasing a new camper and need to find the right weight distribution/sway control hitch. The tow vehicle is a is a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi. The camper has a hitch weight of 450 lbs and the gross vehicle weight is 5500 lbs. I live in Wyoming where it can get very windy, so I am interested in something that can really prevent the sway. Thanks,

When choosing a weight distribution system to work with your 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 and your new camper, the two most important things you will want to know is the tongue weight and the gross trailer weight.
Tongue weight is the tongue weight of the trailer in its fully loaded ready-to-tow condition added to the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Ram.
If we use the tongue weight you gave at 450 lbs and gross trailer weight at 5,500 lbs, I recommend a system like the Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control, part # RP66073. This system has a weight capacity of 10,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity between 400 and 800 lbs. This system includes sway control that helps keep the camper on the road in high winds and when large trucks pass by. This system will not fit trailer frames wider than 2-1/2 inches. I have attached a helpful article that explains weight distribution and sway control you can check out. If after you have determined your tongue weight and find that the numbers have changed, you can either use the attached page with the systems we offer to find one that works for you, or send me the numbers you came up with and I will be happy to make some recommendations that work for you.
For a trailer hitch ball, I recommend part # A-90 or a 2 inch ball, and for a 2-5/16 inch ball I recommend part # 19286.
The shank I recommend is the Reese Weight Distribution Shank, part # RP54970. This shank has a 1-1/4 inch drop and a 6-1/2 inch rise when used with a trunnion-bar system. I have attached a product review video for this shank you can take a look at.
