Carrying 6-8 Bikes for a Family of 6 with a 2016 Acura MDX
Question:
Hi, we are a family of 6 and are looking for a tow behind trailer for my 2016 Acura MDX SUV with factory crossbars to haul 6-8 bikes. What would you suggest? What additional components Platform attachments, straps, etc would you suggest to secure the bikes, yet allow easy donning/doffing after we drive 100 miles to get to the trails? Thanks, in advance, for your advice. If you have any pictures as examples of what I am asking for, that would be great too!

To carry up to 8 bikes on your 2016 Acura MDX I recommend a combination trailer hitch mounted bike rack and roof mounted bike racks. Starting with a trailer hitch, I recommend the etrailer hitch # e98840, it is an excellent choice. This hitch has a 2 inch receiver so it will be compatible with many bike racks. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you.
Then for a bike rack I recommend a model that can hold 5 bikes such as the Swagman XP, # S64970. This rack has a single arm with rotating cradles so it fits many bike styles without the need of an adapter bar.
The last 3 bikes will need to be carried on the roof. Since your MDX has the factory roof rack and crossbars you can use 3 of the Thule FastRide, # TH95JV. Depending on how wide each of the bikes are you may need to have the outer 2 bikes facing forward and the middle bike facing rearward.
Be sure to check the owner's manual for the roof rack capacity prior to loading.
