Hitch And Bike Carrier Recommendation For 2012 Toyota Prius
Question:
I would like to install a tow hitch n a 2012 Prius for a bike rack or very light towing but have been told this cannot be done or it will void the warranty. Any thoughts?

After checking the owner's manual for your 2012 Toyota Prius, it is noted that Toyota does not recommend towing or hitch mounted accessories should be installed. However, there has been a large demand for products that will work with the Prius. For that reason we do offer hitches for the 2012 Prius. They are Class l hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. You may wish to check your owner's manual or with your dealership about installing a hitch and bike rack.
The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 24847. This hitch requires no drilling for installation. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch you can check out.
The bike carrier I recommend is the Thule Helium Aero 2 Bike Rack, part # TH9042PRO. This hitch will work with both 1-1/4 and 2 inch receiver openings, and weighs under 19 lbs. This rack also has a locking system that secures the bike rack to the hitch and a cable lock that will lock the bike to the rack, helping to deter theft. The rack has a weight capacity of 35 lbs per bike or 70 lbs. You may want to take a look at the attached video that shows this bike carrier being installed on a 2013 Prius.
Your Prius is not recommended to be used for towing a trailer so I recommend checking with your dealership before considering towing.
If you plan on carrying any bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes, I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to remain level in the carrier while providing more ground clearance. I have also attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
