Can a Hitch Extender be Used to Lower 2009 Chevy Silverado Tailgate without Hitting Trailer Jack

Question:

I have a 2009 Chevrolet LTZ 2500 HD my camper is a Denali 30 feet long. Could I use this 12 inch extension so that I can lay my tailgate down on my truck. If I use a equalizer hitch? right now I cannot lay my tailgate down it hits my landing gears Electric motor.

Expert Reply:

Using an extender such as # HE6000 will reduce the trailer hitch tongue weight capacity by 50 percent so I do not recommend using it. It is not meant for towing applications, specially with weight distribution due to the extra stresses involved.

You would need to install a 2-1/2 inch hitch, # 41944. Then you could use Titan extension # RP45292 at the 24 inch length with weight distribution. The capacity when used with weight distribution at the 24 inch length is 8,000 pounds. The receiver end of the extender that you would insert the weight distribution shank into is a 2 inch receiver. The other end that would fit into the new hitch is a 2-1/2 inch.
