Brake Controller Selection for 2008 Toyota RAV4 Towing Jayco Pop-Up With Electric Brakes
Question:
Need help choosing a brake controller. Have 08 Rav4 Sport and 99 Jayco popup ~1500 lbs. net, ~2000 lbs. gross with one axle electric brakes. If I down to 2008 Toyota Rav4 Sport, theres only one controller suggested- Dexter 58-8- because it controls 1-2 axles. Can I use a controller that controls more, like 1-3 or 1-4 axles? Some of those have autolevelling and cost less. How do I sort this out? Thanks,

Brake controllers are not vehicle-specific and you can use one of many in your RAV4. Among the most popular is the reliable and easy-to-use Tekonsha P2 # 90885. This excellent controller can work with up to 4 axles, electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes and features auto-leveling. The P2 also features 3 boost levels to let you adjust initial braking power and built-in diagnostics. Written instructions and an installation video are linked for your review.
To install the P2 or other controller in your RAV4 you will need an install kit, part # ETBC7. Both an article and video for this kit are linked for your review.
If your RAV4 does not have a 4-pole you will also need to install a wiring harness like custom-fit wiring harness # 118412 from TowReady. I have linked an installation video for this item showing use in a 2008 RAV4.
