Recommendation for How to Remove a Bent Spindle from Axle on Utility Trailer
Question:
I have a small utility trailer with a bad spindle bent. My question is, how do you remove the existing spindle? Just grind off the welds and wiggle out? Cut it off with chop saw? When measuring my current good spindle, this one is a perfect match from what I can tell.

Removing a damaged spindle is the easy part - it can be cut off with a torch or saw. But welding on a new one is another matter and requires the new spindle be welded exactly straight. It is actually easier to replace the entire axle with a new one that has good spindles on both ends. This may even be less costly than having a new spindle welded on by a qualified welder. It will also ensure that both spindles will have the same working lifespan, which would not be the case if only one is replaced. Spindles MUST be welded on perfectly centered and concentric or all types of tire wear, tracking or vibration issues can arise. Only a highly trained welder with the correct jigs should install a new spindle.
You can select a replacement axle using the link provided. In the left margin you can use the filters to choose the weight rating, spring centers and bolt pattern to match your trailer. For example, Dexter offers a complete kit with 3500-lb 89-inch axle, hubs, bearings, seals and grease as part # 35545I-EZ-89 and this can be seen in the linked video.
