Using Curt Stabilizing Strap # 18050 on 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe
Question:
regarding the curt 18050 strap, I have a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and it seems that putting a strap on the hatch to stabilize a bike rack will cause the strap to rest on the spoiler or plastic cowling that is at the top of the hatch it has a tail light built into it. Is this a concern? Should I put a cloth or foam underneath it? What about the pressure on this plastic cowling? Can it break? I see this is similar to a comment that someone wrote with their vehicle on your website.

The application of the Curt Stabilizing Strap # 18050 will vary somewhat from vehicle to vehicle since this is a universal-fit item and in certain instances like your's there may be some features on the car that require a bit of creativity to install the strap effectively.
I suggest you experiment with alternate positioning of the strap on different parts of the rear hatch. It does not matter so much where the strap is secured on your Santa Fe. As long as the strap can secure effectively it will do its job of reducing random motion of the bike rack in the hitch and hence stress on the hitch.
If you find that the current placement is still the best option then adding some cushioned material like foam rubber or a cloth is a good idea. You will want to ensure minimal interference with the third brake light.
