Largest Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier That Can be Used on a Vehicle

Question:

What is the largest size hitch cargo carrier that can be placed on a vehicle? We have a 6foot and 7foot box that we use to store items and am wondering if this is something that can legally be towed on a hitch carrier assuming if we find a carrier that size. Most carriers go 20x28inch or 20x60. What about 20x72 or 20x86? Let me know if this is legally possible without violating road regulations. Thanks.

Hitch-mount cargo carriers that fit 2-inch hitches are available in both enclosed types such as the GearDeck 17 Enclosed Cargo Carrier # H00604 that you referenced as well as flat tray-type carriers like the 24 x 60-inch ProSeries # 63153 which is the largest such carrier we offer.

Laws regarding use of cargo carriers vary by state so your local highway patrol can give you details about laws in your areas of travel. However, generally it is permissible to use a carrier as large as can be fitted to your vehicle without exceeding the vehicle's own width and without blocking other motorist's views of your tail lights and turn signals.

This is a function both of the carrier itself and what you load onto it; any given carrier may not block visibility but a large box loaded on it might. For this reason accessory lighting kits are offered, such as the # 98174LED. The two linked articles will give you additional information to help you consider your best option.
