Cargo Carrier for Front Mounted Receiver on 2005 Silverado to Carry Chest Freezer Full of Elk

Question:

I am looking for a cargo carrier to put on front of my 2005 Silverado 2500hd to carry a small freezer full of about 400# of elk meat from New Mexico to Alabama. I have a Curt 2inch hitch rated for 500#, just need suitable carrier. Please suggest a cargo carrier that would work.

What are the dimensions of the freezer you're asking about?

The standard railed carrier, like the Pro Series # 63153 measures 24x60. For something a bit narrow and longer at 49x 22-1/2, take a look at the Curt # C18113. Both carriers have a 500 lb capacity, but keep in mind that the weight of the carrier plays into the tongue weight as well. The carrier, the freezer and the meat in the freezer couldn't weigh more than 500 lbs.

You should also consider that carrying a freezer on the front of the vehicle will block some airflow to the radiator and might block the headlights or the driver's visibility. Proceed with caution. You'll also want to check the jurisdictions you'll be traveling through to check on the legality of having a cargo carrier in a front receiver.

If you'd care to reply with the dimensions of the freezer, I'd be happy to make a more specific recommendation.
