Basically you will look in the vehicle owners manual for the towing capacities of that vehicle. Also there should be listed a gross combined weight rating. This is the maximum that the vehicle and trailer can weigh together and includes cargo, passengers, fuel and anything else in the vehicle and trailer.
Stay within the towing capacity and stay within the gross combined weight rating and you will be fine.
If you do not know how much the trailer weighs you can take it, loaded and ready to tow, to a truck stop scale or a scale at a place that sells bulk gravel and weigh the trailer that way. I have linked an article to the right that should help.
