Troubleshooting Brakes Locking Up While Using Trailer Mounted Brake Controller
Question:
I have a camper trailer with electric drum brakes single axle. I have a draw bar mounted controller very basic single knob type. After a couple of hours driving the brakes begin to lock up with the slightest touch of the brake. They do release after taking my foot off the brake pedal but keep locking up when applied again. The controller appears OK as the wire to the brakes shows 0-10 volts on the multimeter depending on the setting. It also s to zero when the foot is taken off the pedal. Any ideas?

There could be one of a couple of things causing the brakes to lock up on your trailer. If the brakes are not adjusted properly. I have attached a video that shows how electric trailer brakes are adjusted you can check out.
You said it is a very basic controller. If the gain is set too high, it can cause the same problem with the brakes applying too aggressively. You can lower the gain setting and see how that works for your trailer.
You may have something in the controller or in the wiring somewhere that is heating up while using the system and causing the brakes to engage.
I have attached a helpful article that explains some of the reasons for problems and recommended ways to repair the problem. I have also attached a helpful article that explains how to test trailer brake magnets for proper function you can take a look at.
