Keeping Bikes on Trunk Mounted Bike Rack from Dinging Mazda Miata

Question:

Re: TH910XT I have an older version of a rack like this without the holdingfoot cradles. Using it, I have dinged my 1990 Miata a zillion times. What prevents the front wheel, using the TH910XT, from banging the car? I plan on repainting the car next summer and I do not want to not be able to carry my bicycle.

The new versions of the Thule Hitch Mounted Bike Racks, like the Thule Passenger 2 # TH910XT, feature cushioned anti-sway cradles that help prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact, and soft rubber pads to protect your vehicle's paint.

You will want to take extra care to keep the contact points of the trunk mounted bike rack and the area on the rear of your vehicle where the rack will make contact clean. This is the best way to reduce any light surface scratches that could appear on your vehicle.

If you want to keep the bikes off your Miata altogether you can use a trailer hitch, like the Curt hitch, part # C11729, a stabilization strap, part # 18050, and a compatible bike rack like the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670.

I have included a link to all the bike racks that are compatible with the Curt hitch for you to check out, as well as a helpful article about choosing the best bike rack mounting style for your vehicle.
