Transmission Oil Cooler Recommendation For 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
Question:
I have a 2002 Avalanche Z71 that I need to put a TOC on So here is the deal, I use this rig to pull mining equipment around in the NW Cascade Mountains. A Derale Series 8000 Plate Fin Transmission Cooler or similar would work fine getting to the mountains and there is where my problem lies. Twenty miles on USFS roads around 5 mph on sometimes 12 grades 5000 feet elv and hotter than H. So I’m something like a Cooler with Fan maybe a Class IV. Your thoughts? Water temp seems to be fine but TOC can get to 250 quickly. Thanks,

Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific, but there are some that are recommended for your 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. I recommend a cooler with a fan like part # D13750. This allows you the option to mount the cooler anywhere in the engine compartment you have room and will guarantee you always have airflow.
For the cooler with fan I recommend the Derale Premium In-Line Fan Control Thermostat, part # D35025. This in-line thermostat determines if additional cooling airflow is needed and will turn the fan on or off accordingly.
You will need to choose a transmission cooler based on where you can mount it. The most efficient place is between the grille and AC condenser core(position 1 as shown on the enclosed drawing. The second most efficient place is between the condenser and radiator,(position 2). In this position, it will be 25 percent less effective. The least efficient location is between the radiator and engine (position 3). The cooler will be 40 percent less effective here and it is recommended that if you must mount the cooler here, you get a larger cooler to make up for the loss.
For this style cooler I recommend the Derale Transmission Cooler, part # D13504. this cooler measures 11 in wide X 12 in tall X 7/8 in deep. I have attached a product review video for this cooler you can check out.
