Trunk Mount Bike Rack for a 2008 Lincoln MKX with Rear Spoiler

Question:

Before we buy, do you recommend this product for our 2008 Lincoln MKX with rear spoiler? The rear spoiler sticks out about 6inch from the rear window, and is made of plastic. It appears that the upper straps would have to attach to this plastic spoiler. We are carrying 3 adult bikes on a 12 hour drive in 2 weeks, and need a reliable bike rack to do the job. Is this the right choice for us, or do you have a better suggestions in this price range? Thank you

While technically a fit, I do not recommend the Thule Passage # TH911XT for your 2008 Lincoln MKX because of that spoiler. It is not meant to support weight. What I do recommend is the Hollywood Racks Over-The-Top rack # HRF2-3.

The Over-The-Top rack was designed specifically for vehicles like yours that have a spoiler. The rack has an upper arm piece that moves the top straps up and over the spoiler so no weight is put on it. I have linked a video showing how it works.

There is nothing else like it that is the same or close in price to the Passage. But spending a little more on the rack is better than replacing the spoiler or losing the bikes and rack on the road.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
