Brake Controller And Wiring Harness Recommendation For 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

Question:

I am confused regarding the correct trailer brake control and wiring harness for our 2008 Tahoe. It has a heavy duty towing package but apparently not a direct plug-in from the controller to the vehicle wiring. Could you please recommend the correct controller draw-tite, tekonsha, Hopkins and wiring the original wiring harness was not installed and is missing. What does it mean to have 360 degrees, 90 degrees, etc. That is not clear. My cell phone died this week and I am stuck with emails for now. Thanks for any help.

It can be a bit confusing when not familiar with the brake controller function and their features. I have attached some helpful articles that you can check out that explain the differences in brake controllers and their functions. I have also attached an article that shows how to install a brake controller on GM trucks, similar to your 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe.

I recommend the Tekonsha prodigy P2 brake controller, part # 90885. This is our most popular proportional brake controller because it is the easiest to install and use. I have attached an installation video that shows this controller being installed on a 2009 Silverado. The 360 degree feature means the internal sensor of the controller will level itself for function even if you are traveling up or down steep grades. The controller has to be mounted horizontally level in order for the sensor to operate correctly.

Since GM does not place a plug-in port under the dash, you will need to connect the brake controller harness under the dash with the truck wiring that is already present. This is explained in the brake controller helpful article I have attached for GM Trucks and SUVs.

To give you a 7-way and a 4-way at the rear of your vehicle I recommend the Hopkins Replacement Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector, part # 30955. This plugs into the vehicle 7-way connector at the back of your Tahoe and gives you both the 4-way and 7-way.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections, and helps prevent corrosion.
