Question:
Does this cargo carrier stick out wider than the body of a 4th generation Subaru Outback? The dimensions seem close and its hard to tell from the pictures.

According to my research the 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon has a width of 5-feet 11.7-inches measured from the two mirrors' outside edges. The body width at the rear is not specified but it likely to be a few inches narrower.
The etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 that you referenced is 61-1/2-inches long and this will be the effective width of the unit when it is mounted to your 2-inch hitch at the rear of the Outback. Therefore it would be close. You can take a tape measure and compare the 61-1/2 inch dimension to the rear of the vehicle to estimate its fit.
If the carrier itself or your loaded cargo will block your Outback's tail lights you will need to use an accessory lighting kit like # e98943-44LED to ensure other motorists can see your brake, tail and signals lights. This lighting kit requires a working 4-pole flat trailer harness; if you have the Sport edition you can use # 46255; if not the Sport you can use # 118467.
