Anti-Rattle Device for a 2004 Volvo V40 Towing a Trailer

Question:

I have a 2004 Volvo V40 for which I purc hased from etrailer a Drawtite hitch and an extra long draw bar. the rattleactually more a knock drives me nuts. I pull a 4 x 8 cargo trailer with a gross weight of 1200 lbs, and a tongue of less than 200 lbs. in your response to the Lexus owner, you referenced the SHP2082 and another item without the exposed plastic handle. Which of these will do the best job for me as the receiver on the Drawtite is very short which I believe is the prime cause of the rattle/knock?

Expert Reply:

The rattle that you are experiencing is because the ball mount shank is slightly smaller than the receiver opening so that you can get it in and out easily. This is the same for any trailer hitch. The receiver depth has less, if any, impact on the rattle. but not to worry because I have a solution for you to take care of that annoying rattle.

The issue though with Class I trailer hitches is that most of the ball mounts for them are solid so an anti-rattle device like # SHP2082 would not work because they require a ball mount with a hollow shank.

For ball mounts that have a solid shank you can use anti-rattle device # RM-061-125 which wedges itself between the ball mount and receiver opening eliminating the play.
