Adapting 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector on 2000 Toyota Tundra to 7-Way Connector on Car Trailer
Question:
I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra with the tow package. It has the 4-pole connector on the truck. How can I convert it to work with my 7-way plug on my car trailer? Thanks for your help in advance.

You will need the 4 to 7-way Adapter, part # 37185. The adapter will plug directly into your existing 4-pole connector, providing lighting functions for the trailer. Of the remaining wires, the white wire grounds to the vehicle, the purple wire taps into the reverse light circuit (if the trailer has reverse lights), the blue wire carries the output from a brake controller, and the black wires carries 12-volts from the battery for any trailer mounted accessories requiring power. This circuit should be protected by a 40 amp inline circuit breaker, part # 9510.
If the trailer has brakes, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. According to my information, the Tundra did not have the provision for plugging in a controller under the dash, so to install the controller the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit will be needed. This kit includes everything necessary for installing your controller, including the adapter and circuit breakers mentioned above.
We have a Brake Controller Installation Guide, as well as some helpful videos that will assist you with the installation. The video shows the installation on a different vehicle, but the procedure would be similar on your Tundra. I will provide links to this information below.
