Weight Distribution for a 3300 Pound Car Hauler Trailer with Short 30 Inch A-Frame Arms

Question:

I tow a 3300 lb car trailer car, tire rack, spare wheels, trailer with a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, V8. The trailer is custom made with a short A frame arms are 30 inches long. The tongue weight ranges from 464 lbs to 522 lbs depending on how many extra wheels are in the tire rack and/or gas cans. The loaded trailer is level as currently hooked up. The maximum tongue weight rating according to Jeep is 720 lbs. 1. Should I use a weight distribution hitch to save wear and tear on rear wheel bearings and suspension? 2. Will the Curt 17330 fit or are there other options to consider.

I have a great recommendation for you but the Curt short-arm system # C17330 isn't going to be the best option. The issue is that the bars are only about 1-1/2 inches shorter than other systems and the lift brackets would still likely interfere with something on the trailer and would not be allowed to install where they need to.

What I recommend solves that problem. Take a look at Reese Steadi-Flex system # RP66559. The narrow brackets on this system can be mounted from 27-32 inches back on the trailer frame so there will be no interference.

This system is rated for 500 to 1,000 pounds tongue weight so it covers the range you specified. It also includes sway control built-in. And this system does include a shank with a max rise of 6-1/2 inches and max drop of 1-1/4 inches. The only thing you will need is a properly sized ball. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch.

Wright distribution is recommended any time the gross trailer weight is at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight or if the trailer causes the vehicle to sag. I have linked some help articles on weight distribution and sway control and on determining tongue weight for you.
