Question:

Have Subaru 2002 H6 3-cylinder Outback with aftermarket Curt trailer hitch. Want to buy and install a Curt Triflex brake controller, but am confused about what additional wiring/adapters I need to buy to install it.

To install a brake controller on your Subaru Outback wagon, you'll first need to install a functioning 4-pole connector, using part # 118461, unless your Outback wagon is the Sport model. The connector is located behind the access panel behind the drivers side taillight assembly. If you have the Sport model, you'll need to use the # C59236 hardwire kit that would wire directly into the wiring harnesses feeding the taillight assemblies.

With the 4-pole installed, you'll also need the # ETBC7 brake controller install kit. The kit includes an adapter that will plug into the 4-pole and convert it to a 7-way. The adapter has 4 remaining wires, one that attaches to the vehicle battery, one to the output circuit from the brake controller, one to the reverse lamp circuit and one would ground to the vehicle.

To connect the brake controller, you can cut off the plug installed on the controller and hardwire each circuit, or you can use a quick disconnect pigtail like part # C51515.

I've linked you to our help article that explains the brake controller install kit, plus to some install videos that you might find helpful.
