Tire Recommendation for a Trailer Used on Paved and Dirt Roads Size 175/80-13

Question:

I need new trailer tires P175/80 R13 I see you have several choices. While I tow my travel trailer on highways I frequently spend 60 miles or more at a stretch on dirt roads, with washboards and/or sharp rocks. Which product would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

The best tire for your trailer will really depend on how much time you spend on paved roads versus dirt or gravel roads. At the 175/80-13 tire size, you can choose between a radial tire and a bias ply tire. Radial tires, like part # AM10210, have more flex, better ground contact, traction, tread wear and runs cooler than a bias ply tire.

A bias ply tire, like part # AM1ST77 has a thicker sidewall and is ideal for off-road use, but if you spend more time traveling on paved roads, a radial tire would probably be the way to go.

The next factor that you will want to consider is the load rating of the tire. You will want to choose a set of tires that matches or exceeds the weight capacity of the axle. Part # AM10210 and # AM1ST77 that I mentioned above are load range D tires with a weight rating of 1,610 lbs at 65 psi. Load range C tires are also available, # AM10199 for radial and # AM1ST76 for bias. They are rated at 1,360 lbs at 50 psi.

I have attached a help article on trailer tires that will give you more information as well.

I definitely recommend going with radial ply tires. Can you tell me what size is currently mounted?

@Rick Thanks for the info. I believe you have 175/80-13 tires. For this size I recommend the Kenda Karrier # AM10199, which features a radial 6 ply construction perfect for your highway driving and still plenty strong enough for the short distance on gravel roads. It also has an excellent speed rating of 81 mph.
