Can Safety Chains On 36 Ft Keystone Outback Camper Be Extended Using Quick Links
Question:
Hello!! I currently tow a 36foot Keystone Outback camper that weighs in at around 7500 lbs. Recently, I changed the shank on my weight distributing hitch to accommodate the 6inch lift kit on my truck. Both truck and trailer now sit nice and level. However, since I have added a longer shank, my safety chains will now barely reach, so I either need to replace them and they are welded to the camper frame or lengthen them by adding a quick link to the chains. Chains supplied by camper manufacturer are 5/16, and came with a clevis latch where it attaches to the truck. My question is, can I extend these chains by one or two links on each chain using a quick link? If so, what size should I get? And if I can, can I add the quick links to the clevis side of the chain so I dont have to cut the chains off the camper? Any help would be most appreciated!! Thanks!!

You can add links to your existing safety chains. My recommendation is to make sure the links you add are correctly installed, and have sufficient strength. Many of the quick links we offer may not have the weight capacity you are looking for on your 36 ft Keystone Outback Camper.
If you decide to replace your existing safety chains I recommend the Laclede 35 inch Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, part # 1483-535-04, that you mentioned. Two of these chains are rated for 10,800 pound working load limit, and should be sufficient for your towing limit of 10,000 lbs.
