Parts Needed to Add 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500
Question:
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 My vehicle already has the factory installed 4-Way flat trailer connector and a blue oem plug under the dash. I understand how to attach the brake controller to the dash, how to connect the brake control adapter from the brake controller to the oem plug. I also understand how to install the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector to the bumper, and connect to the existing 4-way. From there is where I am getting lost. The Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector has four additional wires. The white is obviously the ground. What am I supposed to do with the additional three wires black, white, yellow? I have not yet purchased any of the above but would like to understand what I am supposed to do in order to ensure that I purchase everything needed at the same time. Thank you in advance.

On a 2007 Dodge Ram with the factory installed 4-Way trailer connector, you can plug in a brake controller to the port under the dash. However, the output wire (blue) from the controller terminates at a connector located in or just behind the driver side wheel well. The forward side of the connector will contain the output wire but it does not continue back into the connector it is plugged into.
You will need enough additional wire, # 10-1-1 (sold in increments of one foot) to go from that connector to the new 7-Way. It will attach to what should be a blue wire on the 4 to 7-Way adapter or if not blue then whichever color is coming from the back of the 7-Way in the 7 oclock position.
On the # 37185 adapter the yellow wire is for reverse lights (if the trailer has them, if not it can be capped off and stowed out of the way). And the black wire is for 12 volt power. You would need enough wire # 10-1-1 to reach from the wire to the vehicle battery. The wire will go to a mounted 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, and then from the breaker to the positive battery terminal.
Be sure to check the owners manual to determine the fuse locations for the tow package/brake controller wiring and install fuses as needed. I have linked a how-to article that should also help.
