Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier Recommendation For 2015 Acura RDX Rated For Class ll Hitch
Question:
I just purchased a 2015 Acura RDX. Looking at hitches, I see only one option Curt 12083, which was also one of the choices for the 2014 RDX reportedly the 2014 and 2015 vehicles are identical. Any reason you think the Curt 13130 wouldnt work? I have a bike rack that needs 2inch opening on hitch.

I did some research and found that the maximum towing weight capacity for the 2015 Acura RDX is 1500 lbs when it is adequately equipped with either engine or drivetrain upgrades. The trailer hitches that are listed for your vehicle are Class ll hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening, like the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C12083. Although the 2014 and 2015 vehicles may be very similar, changes to the body or frame could be the reason a Class ll hitch is all the vehicle is rated for.
Using an adapter or extension on a trailer hitch will reduce the load capacity by 50 percent. With the maximum tongue weight capacity of 150 lbs, reducing that would certainly make it difficult to be able to carry a bike carrier loaded with bikes on the rear of your RDX.
I recommend a bike carrier that is designed to fit 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers like the Thule Helium Aero 2 Bike Rack, part # TH9042PRO. This is an aluminum carrier that features a tilting design which allows you to access your rear cargo area, and weighs a little over 19 lbs, which will certainly allow you to carry 2 bikes with no problem.
If you are carrying bikes with alternative frames like women's or kids bikes i recommend an adapter bar like part # TH982XT. this attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more evenly in the carrier while providing more ground clearance.
