What Is The Typical Brake Controller Pin Location For A 7-Way?

Question:

Our company has a dozen gooseneck and bumper pull trailers wired with a 7-pole round plug and the company has added a socket on the trucks and wired in from the 7-blade socket. My question is: can the brake controller wire from the 7-blade socket be added to the stop light pin or does it need to be on its own pin? Does it matter if it is an OEM controller or a add-on controller? Thanks, any info would help.

Hello Michael. The brake controller wire does need to be on its own pin. The standard 7-way wiring has that pin on the bottom right pin if you were standing behind the truck looking at the socket. The diagram below will show you the typical pin location for the brake wire.

With electric brakes, it will not matter if the controller is OEM or aftermarket, because both types of controllers are electric brake compatible. The only time you could potentially run into issues with the OEM controllers is on trailers with electric over hydraulic brakes.
