Troubleshooting Hub Issues After Replacing A 17146 Grease Seal With An RG06-050 Grease Seal

Question:

My existing single lip seal is a TCM 17146. I ordered the RG06-050 double lip seal as a replacement for my 3500lb axles. Prior to installing the seal into the hub I put a little grease on it and slid it onto the axle shaft. The new seal fits but it does seem to be a little to snug and it also seems like once I get everything put together it wont allow the hub to spin freely. I measured everything and all the specs indicate that the RG06-050 is the proper replacement but Im second guessing myself now. Is it normal for new seals to fit this way and did I order the correct part?

Hey Richard,

From I can find the 17146 should have a 1.719" inner diameter and 2.562" outer diameter. The # RG06-050 has a 2.565" outer diameter which would explain the snugness but you should still be able to move the hub. If the seal didn't go in straight then it could potentially be sitting wrong on the spindle and causing the drag. I would just remove the # RG06-050 seal and replace it with another 17146. We don't currently offer a 17146 or compatible replacement at this time but I see there are other suppliers that do offer it.
