Does Drum Width Matter when Picking Out Replacement Hub/Drum for Trailer Axle

Question:

I am adding a second axel trailer brake to my utility trailer. I have an old RV trailer that I got the brakes off of. The brakes fit perfectly but my trailer has 5 - 5 lug pattern and the old brake drum is 5 - 4.75. I was looking at your brake drums and they seem to be what I need. The only thing i am concerned about the width measurement is 2 5/8 and mine measure 3 if I am measuring the right place. The old axel is a Dexter.

Hey Michael, I wouldn't let the overall width of the drum bother you as that's not a dimension that's used to pick out replacement hub/drums. Instead just go by the capacity of the axle to know. Since we know you have a Dexter axle as long as it's a 3,500 lb capacity axle then the hub/drum part # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K that you referenced does for sure fit.
