Troubleshooting Kwikee Electric RV Steps That Won't Fully Retract
Question:
When the steps retract they work ok until they are about fully retracted. This is when they have a shaking or chattering sound. Like they don’t know to stop retracting. Then it will stop. After examining the gear there are several teeth damaged at the end of the gear. So I know I will have to replace the gear but is the gear on the motor going to be OK? The RV has been lightly used and not very old. Is there a cause of damage to the gear? Just trying to fix it once and be good. No problems with extending steps out.

Hi Les,
With the teeth being chewed up the sensor in the steps probably isn't getting the signal that the steps are closed because it isn't fully turning, causing the steps to keep puling in even though they are 99% in. The motor and controller could be damaged but I'd start by replacing the gear first and then seeing if you need more replacement parts. The # LC369354 you were looking at is designed to fit Kwikee 24 and 25 series steps. You'll want to check the underside of the mounting plate for the serial numbers of the steps to ensure you're getting the correct replacement gear. If you want to send me some pictures of the stickers I can confirm for you.
