Replacement Brake Kit, Surge Actuator, and Bearing Kit for a 1988 EZ Loader Boat Trailer

Question:

I am looking at replacement brake drums for a 1988 EZ Loader boat trailer equipped with drum surge brakes but dont know if the axle cabacity is 3500 lbs or 3750 lbs. Reviewing your videos, it appears the 3750 has riveted brake pads. Can I put the 3750 lbs kit on a 3500lb axle? Also, I will be replacing the master cylinder. The unit removed is a Atwood 85736. Are these still made or do I need to replace the entire unit? Finally, how do I determine what replacement bearing kit to purchase? It is a 10inch drum with 5 studs. Thank you!

Hey Scott!

Both the 3,500 lb and 3,750 lb brake assemblies work with a 10" x 2-1/4" drum so either one will fit with your hubs, but you can verify your axle capacity either on the sticker tag on the side of your EZ Loader Trailer, or by looking at the tag in the middle of your axle(s).

One you know what weight capacity you have then I recommend getting Free-Backing brakes so you'll be able to back the trailer up. For 3,500 lb brake assemblies this will be part # AKFBBRK-35 and for 3,750 lb brake assemblies it will be part # T4071600-500.

Atwood went out of the coupler business a number of years ago so there aren't any direct replacement master cylinders. To replace your surge brake actuator you can use either the bolt-on # DM72VR or a weld-on for an A-Frame # DM8609502.

Finally, for a replacement bearing kit you should need the kit # BK2-100 for a #84 spindle. You can verify this kit will fit your application by comparing the parts you remove with the following:

- Inner Bearing L68149
- Outer Bearing L44649
- Grease Seal ID 1.719" and OD 2.565"
