Redline 2k Torque Ramp Spring Recommendation for a Heavy Barge Door

Question:

I have a set of custom ramps on a steel barge. I would like to add spring assist to lift the ramps easier. Each ramp is 10ft long and is built from 15 inch wide, 3 inch web 1/2inch steel channel. 3 pieces of channel welded side to side for a total of 45 inches wide. The total weight of each ramp is almost 1200lbs. Why such a ramp? It was free. Can I add 3 of the RS16933 type springs per steel channel? Maybe 9 for each ramp? Would adding more springs add lifting power? Will adding length to the spring ears help with the long ramp length? Thank you for your expertise and time.

The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. To use this spring on your barge ramp you must have a ramp hinge with a 1-1/2 inch diameter rod or pipe where the ramp meets the trailer.

The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and barge when the ramp is in the up position. The spring should not be welded to the ramp or barge, the tension and the rod will hold the spring in place. The springs we carry are designed for heavyweight steel doors or ramps commonly found on heavy equipment trailers or car haulers, but could potentially work on your barge ramp. If your barge is not set up to accept a hinge spring, a hinge would need to be fabricated and installed.

The more springs you installed onto the ramp the easier the ramp would be for you to lift. This spring is rated for 2,000 ft lbs of torque. Now thats not the lifting force, that the amount of rotating torque that will be present at the hinge for the ramp. It's beyond my math skills to determine how many springs you would need to make the ramp feel light enough for you to lift it, but you could always keep adding more until the ramp felt light enough for you. I would not recommend adding length to the springs either.

The right hand side spring is part # RS16933RH.
