Higher Capacity Trailer Tire to Use in Place of a 215/75-15 Tire on a 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

My 5th wheel has 215 75R15 load range E. My camper has a dry weight of 9,997lbs. What tire do you recommend for replacement? I would to go up on the load range. Not sure the original tires were more than border line for total carrying weight.

Expert Reply:

A 215/75-15 is not a common trailer tire size. If may be a light truck tire which are sometimes used on trailers. I recommend going with a 225/75-15, # AM10303, which is rated for 2,830 pounds. Four of these would have a capacity of 11,320 pounds. Please note that going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer. This new size will also be about a 1/2 inch wider so you will need to make sure there is clearance between the trailer and the inboard sidewall of the existing tires.
