Question:
I have an old tekonsha voyager on my 2002 dodge ram 2500 and I can’t get anything to work on it. I have 12 volts coming into it and I believe it’s hooked up correctly. I wasn’t the one to hook it up it came on the truck when I got it I’m leaning towards I just need a new controller but just not sure.

On a controller like the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 since it is proportional it can be more difficult to diagnose issues than some other controllers. First since you know you have power going into the controller on the black wire you will want to determine if the controller is getting power on the red wire when you press the brake pedal. The white wire needs to have a good connection to ground and the blue wire to the 7-way. When the controller sees a trailer connected the led light should turn green or red when the pedal is pressed. You can bench test the controller by connecting the wiring the same way to a 12 volt battery and connect the blue wire to a light bulb to act as the power source. One reason proportional controllers are difficult to test when the vehicle is not moving it will not sense a deceleration and does not send power to the brakes. Using the manual override on this controller will send power to the brakes even when the vehicle is not moving.
