Converting A Trailer With A 5 On 4.5" Hub To A 6 On 5.5" Hub

Question:

I have a dexter 3500 lb axle without brakes. It has a 5 x 4 1/2 hub. I would like to convert this to 6 x5.5 bolt pattern to use matching wheels from my truck. It has 18 inch wheels. Do yo have a replacement complete hub assembly that will work for this? Thanks Steve

Hey Steve,

To replace your hub we'll need to first determine the bearings and seals that fit your spindle. You can look at the face of the bearings and grease seal to see if there's a part number stamped into them still otherwise you'll need to use a digital caliper # PTW80157 and measure points B, C, and D from the guide below.

18" wheels are pretty large for this axle capacity so you might have some clearance issues with the fenders or body of the trailer using this size. Truck tires are also not really designed the same way as a trailer tire and (weaker sidewalls) so they'll wear faster than a standard trailer tire.
