Should Older Trailer Replace Breakaway Kit WIth One That Has Charger

Question:

Breakaway switch question: I am having my single 5200lb axle replaced on my single axle travel trailer and have an existing Bargman breakaway switch that is as old as the trailer 2013 build. This switch is powered by the travel trailer batteries that are always well maintained. It would seem that it would make sense to replace it but my question is whether there is a need to upgrade to a separate battery powered unit?

Hi Barry; that's a good question and honestly, even if your batteries are well maintained I would definitely replace the breakaway with one that has a built-in charger. This will just ensure that no matter what, the kit is always going to work, and while it is likely you'll never need it (most don't), I always like to err on the side of safety, so I do recommend going with the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 20400.

Hi Kyle, I appreciate your prompt reply. However, I have to point out that my 5,000 lb single axle travel trailer has a good battery pack, that is well maintained and kept in extremely good charge state as it incorporates a significant on board solar panel charging system. I can understand that a trailer without 12V batteries would require a breakaway switch with its own battery power source but in my case I am finding it difficult to justify the additional outlay for something that appears to be just simply not required. Maybe I am missing something here but I would value your take on this. Thanks

@Barryg You're right it certainly isn't required, I just personally like having the independent charger, mostly for peace of mind. I would say most people probably don't have the type of set up you described, so that's the angle I was coming from. But for a significant solar panel system and how you describe the regular maintenance of the batteries, it doesn't sound like you need it the way I think most do.
