Recommended Flat Towing Components For A 2018 Ford Explorer Platinum

Question:

I have a 2018 Ford Explorer Platinum that I want to tow behind my Newmar motor coach. It is required for an air force one braking system and I’m leaning towards the Roadmaster night hawk tow bar. Can you advise the parts I need for this project…. Base plate, braking system, tow bar, wiring, battery cut off etc. Thank you

Hi Brian,

Because the Platinum comes standard with adaptive cruise control there are only going to be two options based on your engine:

If you have a non-EcoBoost engine the # RM-524453-5 will work with active air shutters.

If you do have an EcoBoost engine the # RM-524446-5 will work but you would need to remove the active air shutters if your model has them.

The Roadmaster Nighthawk All-Terrain Tow Bar # RM-676 would be a great option for your tow bar. It comes with safety cables, a 7-wire to 6-wire cable, and a 6-pole socket so you won't have to purchase them separately. To complete your wiring and have your Explorer's tail lights match the motorhome's you'll just need part # RM-152.

The battery will need to be disconnected while towing so I recommend installing the Roadmaster Battery Disconnect # RM-766 so that you can disconnect/reconnect with the push of a button.

If your motorhome has air brakes then the Demco Air Force One # SM99243 would be a great option.

If your motorhome has hydraulic brakes then you'll want to go with the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251 instead. This system comes with an indicator light that has to tap into the brake light switch. With yours being unusable you'll need to also install the Roadmaster stop light switch kit # RM-751000 to wire the light to.
