Should My Thule Podium Roof Rack Be Removed In The Winter?
Question:
I bought this Rapid Podium kit for my 2015 Subaru Outback with factory side raised rails in 2023 about a year ago. I installed it with the Evo wing bars and used that for my hullavator for the paddling season Feb-Nov without any problems. However, the front crossbar has somehow slid back about 8” over our strange Michigan winter. I can readily tighten up the podium feet but I’m wondering what would have caused the crossbar to slip. Has the Subaru factory crossbar shrunk in the cold? Should I remove the crossbars in the winter? The car is parked outside.

Hello Carol. That is definitely an interesting question. It is certainly not normal for the crossbar to slide back like that. Something must have come loose at some point which allowed the bar to slide back in the track. That is really the only explanation since the podium feet and fit kit are literally bolted together. As far as what specific event caused it to move, it is really hard to say. Perhaps the car was parked at an angle which caused it to slide back slowly over time? Maybe that and a combination of wind and ice? Thats my best theory at least.
At this point I recommend moving the crossbar back to its original position and re-tightening the bolts. Maybe give the crossbar a good tug to make sure it won't go anywhere. I also recommend checking periodically to make sure everything is secure.
Roof racks do not require removal in winter weather, and they are designed to work normally in the cold. Although removing them when not in use can help them to last longer. We are down here in Missouri so our winters are not quite as harsh as yours up in Michigan, but it can get very cold. I know a ton of people, myself included, who leave roof racks on year-round without issue. So, if you just make sure all of the hardware stays tight you will be good to go. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions.
