Does Using A Hitch Extender Reduce the Capacity of a Trailer Hitch

Question:

Hi, I have a camper with the tailgate down and need an extension. I will also be towing a trailer over 3500lbs, so I will need to upgrade to a 2.5in hitch. My question is, does the 2.5 to 2 decrease the tow capacity of the 2.5in hitch and extender? Again, I will be towing up to 4500 to 5000 when the trailer is loaded. Thanks!

Yes, anytime you use a hitch extender or reducer like # HR26 you will lose about 1/3 of your hitches overall capacity. However, since you'll be towing a trailer that weighs between 4,500 to 5,000 lbs, the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 will still work fine because it has a 5,000 lb max capacity.

In all honesty, even with the 1/3 capacity reduction on a class V hitch you'd still be in good shape for what you're wanting to do.
