Recommended 7-Way Connector for a 2018 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I have a 2018 Highlander with the tow package and I want to go from a 4 pin connector to a 7 pin. I plan on using a wireless brake controller but wonder if I install a ETBC7 instead of an ETBC7L that I would have the option of going to a wired brake controller in the future.

I always recommend installing the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7 over it's counter part the ETBC7L. The additional cost upfront is minimal but the main reason I recommend it is the installation time. You already have to run a power line up to the battery. It is just as easy to run two wires at the same time and not have to repeat the process down the road. You can just run the blue brake controller wire into your cab and cap it off.
I also recommend purchasing the No-Drill Mount Bracket item # 18136. The bracket included with the item # ETBC7 needs to be screwed into something. This one wraps around your hitch giving you something to screw the bracket into.
I have linked an installation video below that we did on a 2019 Highlander to walk you through the process of getting the item # ETBC7 set up.
An additional note. Wireless brake controllers like the Curt Echo item # C51180 work with both the item # ETBC7 and the ETBC7L.
