Recommendation for a 5th Wheel Hitch with a 2010 Ford F-250 Short-Bed

Question:

I own a 2010 F250 short bed. Planing to purchase an Open Range 337 GVWR 13,800 or Cameo 32FWS GVWR 14,800. Open Range might not need the Sidewinder, Cameo will. Is this the hitch you would choose? What about the 30047? Price is good, however do I need to be concerned about the clam shell jaws coming open is use? Any info you could provide would be appreciated.

Your decision should be made on how you plan to use your truck. For me, I would choose the Elite Series 18K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, item # RP30144. My reasons for choosing this hitch are that I own a farm and use the bed of the truck for many other tasks. I also own a gooseneck trailer that would easily be towed using the Elite Series Gooseneck Trailer Hitch, item # RP30845, and would still leave the bed open when not needed. You will need the, # RP30073, installation kit with this hitch.

If you use your truck mostly for towing the fifth-wheel trailer and full use of the truck bed is not a concern, when not towing, then the 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch by Reese, item # RP30047, would be a good choice. You will need the, # RP50082-58 installation kit with this hitch.

We have not had any issues with the locking jaws on either of these hitches, with or with out a Sidewinder, when properly maintained and used. It is a good idea to follow the manufacturers recommendation for lubrication and maintenance on any hitch.

When selecting a Sidewinder you will need to select the one with a rotating turret for the pin box on the trailer you purchase (see link).
