Would A Friction Sway Control Kit Be Needed With A Curt MV Weight Distribution Hitch

Question:

I’ve got 2 questions about this product. The first one is I’m wondering if I truly need this sway control unit or not. I own a 2016 Ram Laramie 3500 Crew Cab Diesel Dually and tow a 2016 Toy Hauler which fully loaded weighs approximately may weigh 10,000 lbs and I’m running a Curt MV Weight Distribution WD System # C17063 without the sway control bar. I haven’t had any issues with sway yet but I’d hate to find out I do one day. Also if I did need this sway control bar is there any other way to mount it to the frame/tongue of the toy hauler that doesn’t involve drilling? Just curious is all. Thanks and happy new year!

You'll typically have more sway if the weight of the trailer is on the heavier end of your truck's towing capacity, but there are a lot of other factors that can contribute to trailer sway. If you're Ram hasn't had any sway issues so far then you wouldn't be required to add in more friction sway control, but you certainly still can to help prevent a sway event from happening in the future. The Curt Friction Sway Control # 17200 can be mounted to your Curt MV WDH # C17063 very easily since it already has a ball mount hole drilled into the hitch head. You will have to drill into the frame of the trailer to mount the ball for the trailer end of the system though.

For trailers 6,000 - 10,000lbs you'll need to use two sway control kits and before backing up you'll need to remove both kits.

One friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need 2 sway-control units, 1 on either side of the trailer. You will also want to use 2 units if your trailer is 26' or longer.
