Recommendations for a Moderately Sized Cargo Carrier for Traveling

The Curt 20x48 Railed Cargo Carrier, part # C18145 would be a great choice. It can be used in Class II or III receivers and is economically priced. To protect your gear from the elements, a cargo bag like part # e98990 is recommended.
If you will be traveling through areas that are prone to snow and have sloppy roads, an enclosed cargo carrier may be a better choice to protect your cargo. The Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier # Y62VR will work as long as you have a 2-inch hitch. We have a video review of the carrier that I have linked for you to check out.
