Will The Charging System on Tow Vehicle Damage a Lithium Travel Trailer Battery When Towing?

Question:

I am towing an rv trailer with my GMC Savana van. I am switching to a 100 amp lithium battery for my trailer battery, from an AGM battery. I assume the alternator will charge the trailer battery to some degree as I drive. I dont rely on this process for charging my trailer battery anyways. I am concerned if having a lithium battery will harm the alternator. Thanks for your time

Expert Reply:

The Alternator on your GMC Savana van will not cause harm to the Lithium Battery # 34282738 in your trailer. It will simply maintain the battery while it is being towed. I do recommend you check the Converter # PD69RR on your trailer to ensure it is rated for charging Lithium batteries. If you are not sure please let me know what converter you have and I can verify if you need to change it out or change a setting on the converter.
