Will Suspension Helper Springs or Weight Distribution Stop Sag on a 2014 Ram 1500 4x2 Quad Cab

Question:

Hi I am towing a 20 ft. enclosed cargo trailer and it weights around 7000lbs loaded. My 2014 ram SQUATS very badly. Will these fit on my 2014 ram 1500 4x2 quad cab rear coils? Will it help eliminate the squatting?

As long as your 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 does not have the air suspension then you can use the Timbren springs, # TDR1500DQ, and they can help with the squat when connected to the trailer. But suspension enhancement is not the best solution for sag caused by a trailer because the springs can actually act like a fulcrum and cause too little tongue weight and a poor ride with the trailer.

The best solution for rear end sag caused by a trailer is to use weight distribution. You choose weight distribution based on the total tongue weight which is the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the truck.

Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. So for a 7,000 pound trailer that would be 700 to 1,050 pounds. You can use a Reese system, # RP66542, rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight.

This system comes with the shank but if the maximum 6-1/2 inch rise or maximum 1-1/4 inch drop is not enough to tow the trailer level, you would need a different shank such as # RP3215 that offers up to 6-3/4 inches drop or 11-1/2 inches rise.

And you will need a ball. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch. I have included a link to our help article on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
