Using Adapter # C57674 to Tow 7-Way-Equipped Camper Trailer with 4-way-Equipped Vehicle

Question:

Hello I bought this for my 2004 toyota sequoia with a 4 way flat to pull a pop out shamrock 19 ft camper with a 7 round plug. There are 4 extra wires on the truck side, do these have to be hardwired for something or are they optional? It seems to be a light camper so curious if I need anything done besides this adapter to pull the trailer and operate the lights. Thanks!

The 2004 Toyota Sequoia has a rated towing capacity of either 6200-lbs or 6500-lbs depending on the version, so you should be fine in terms of towing capacity for your Shamrock 19-foot pop up which weighs either 3524-lbs (model 19) or 4432-lbs (model 19L). You will also need to verify that your 2-inch hitch receiver is rated adequately for your trailer load; there should be a safety/warning sticker on it to indicate its capacity.

The Curt Trailer Connector Adapter # C57674 that you referenced will plug in to the 4-way flat connector on your Sequoia. The basic lighting functions from the vehicle (stop, turn and tail) will be carried through this wiring to the 7-way and on to the trailer. The other wires on the adapter (blue and black) are there to allow for additional functions, including brake signals for the trailer's electric brakes (blue wire) and 12V auxiliary power (black wire) for trailers that require it for lights, appliances, etc. The white wire is a ground that secures to the frame on your Sequoia.

You will also need a trailer brake controller to send braking signals from the tow vehicle to the trailer brakes. Among the most popular and reliable units we offer is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 proportional-type controller # 90885. Along with this controller you will need a brake controller installation kit # 5506 which includes connectors, wiring and circuit breakers. You will need to make connections at the 7-way adapter for both trailer brakes and 12V power. You will also need to make connections under the dash to provide 12V power, a brake input signal, ground and brake output connections at the controller.

The P2 includes a 4-wire harness to make these connections: the red wire connects to the cold side of the brake light switch (above the brake pedal) to provide an input signal to the controller; the black wire connects to the battery positive terminal via the 20-amp circuit breaker included in the wiring kit; the blue wire gets routed to the blue wire on the 7-way adapter; the white ground wire connects the battery negative terminal. You will use the 40-amp breaker for the trailer 12V power feed.

The linked article and video will help illustrate the process. I have also included a general article on towing for your reference.
