When we do a hardwire brake controller installation here at our facility, we always use 10 gauge wire to carry the brake output circuit from the brake controller to the trailer connector. A 12 gauge wire is smaller in diameter which would increase the resistance and could make the wire overheat.

I spoke with my contacts in the Tech Services departments at Curt and Tekonsha, both of which recommend using 10 gauge wire, and would discourage using anything smaller.

We offer a brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7 that provides everything needed to install a controller on a vehicle equipped with a 4-pole trailer wiring harness. If you do not already have a 4-pole connector, one can be installed using part # C56332 for vehicles with the tow prep package or # 118571 for vehicles without the tow prep package.

I have linked you to an install video and some help articles that you might find useful.
